Zoning Board approves two-year settlement over candle factory

Zoning Board Of Appeals · Meeting of March 19, 2026

GREENFIELD — Zoning Board approves settlement in long-running candle factory dispute. The Zoning Board of Appeals unanimously approved a settlement agreement resolving a two-year legal battle over Aromatic Fillers, LLC, a candle manufacturing business on Haywood Street, on the motion of Peter Wozniak, seconded by Mark Maloni. A resident had appealed a building permit granted to the company, contending manufacturing was prohibited in the zoning district.

Using the three-pronged test from Powers v. Building Inspector Barnstable (1973), the Board determined that the smell from candle production constituted a different neighborhood effect, requiring a special permit. Aromatic Fillers, LLC ceased operations by the end of 2025 rather than seek the permit.
