GREENFIELD -- The Greenfield Recreation Commission, meeting Oct. 1, got updates on winter program planning, a stalled basketball court project and the budget behind next year's fireworks shows.

TOWN -- Recreation Director Christy told commissioners that fall seasonal programs are underway and that, as of Oct. 1, the department has begun preparing for winter parks, programs and events.

Commissioners said they confirmed with the city's finance director that plans to refinish the basketball court at the swimming area remain on hold. The project was approved in the capital budget, but the related financial order has been held up while the city squares away its books; no timeline was given for when work will move forward.

The commission also reviewed numbers ahead of bidding on fireworks for the 2027 Winter Carnival and Independence Day. The city fireworks account now shows a positive balance of $2,608.41, a reversal from a roughly negative $11,000 balance discussed at the commission's prior meeting; no new funds were added in the interim. The nonprofit Friends of Greenfield account holds about $18,956.82. For 2026, the Winter Carnival display cost $5,000 for 426 total shells, while the Independence Day display cost $13,250 for 626 shells, continuing a shell count that has stayed roughly consistent since 2022 despite rising costs.

Commissioners discussed limiting how much of the Friends account is drawn down for 2027, floating a range of $3,000 to $5,000, and supplementing that with an estimated $7,000 typically collected from vendors and $4,000 to $8,000 from stand-alone fundraisers. Several commissioners said they want to find ways to raise the money without relying on volunteers logging large amounts of unpaid hours.
