Greenfield's Recreation Department reported record swim-area crowds and a $36,000 fireworks fundraising haul as summer programs hit their midpoint.

GREENFIELD -- Recreation Commission officials delivered a wide-ranging director's report at their July 16 meeting, covering town pool operations, summer camp, youth clinics and the Fourth of July fireworks event.

TOWN -- The town's swim area "has been very busy" amid recent heat waves and smoky air, with July 4 described as "the busiest that I can remember at the park," overflowing both the main and bike parking lots. Staff credited gate attendants and concessions workers for handling the crowd, and the public for using provided trash bags to keep the park clean. Summer camp is in its third week, with a mid-summer session coming next week. Starsports Soccer is continuing after a weather-related makeup session, and current offerings include a learn-to-play pickleball clinic, a golf clinic, a field hockey clinic, skateboard lessons and a three-week yoga session. Reported enrollment: Starsports Soccer, 20; tennis, 9 (with only one adult tennis sign-up); field hockey, about 8; learn-to-play golf, 5; pickleball, 9; and skateboard lessons, about 6, with more interest coming in through social media.

COMMUNITY -- The town's Fourth of July fireworks fundraising campaign -- which included a formal, a mini-golf event and a trivia night -- raised $17,654 directly for the Recreation Department and just under $19,000 through the Friends group, for a reported total of about $36,000. Commissioners noted the fireworks display itself was shorter than in past years and discussed exploring a drone show as a possible future alternative. Separately, a World Cup watch party funded by a $10,000 grant proved popular enough that the Greenfield Garden Cinema added multiple extra viewing nights, with the tournament final scheduled for that Sunday.
