Assessors Approve New Hardship Tax Exemption Rules
Other Committee 2026-09-23 Part 2 · Meeting of September 23, 2026
Greenfield assessors tighten hardship tax exemption rules and flag another possibly late billing cycle. Board members Jeff Green, Jim Geisman and Jeremy Ebersole unanimously approved revisions to Clause 18 and Clause 18A, adding required in-person meetings with an assessor, multi-year income documentation and a three-tax-year cap on deferrals. Staff told the board the town's revaluation vendor will again deliver certified values late, as in 2025, putting the January 1 billing deadline "close" but not guaranteed.
The board plans to bring hypothetical residential-commercial tax rate scenarios, off a current 75-25 split, to the City Council's Ways and Means and A&O committees before final values are certified. Members also approved motor vehicle excise abatements for September 3 through September 23 and voted to enter executive session on real estate, Appellate Tax Board and exemption-extension matters.
