Greenfield Board of Assessors flags tax portal access problem and data center valuation limits at July 1 meeting. Chair Jim Geisman told the three-member board that early new growth figures from the city's contractor stand at roughly $3 million, with additional properties still to be added before the FY27 assessment cycle is complete. Member Chuck Green reported that the city's Unipay online payment portal had been returning an error message for first-quarter real estate tax bills since they arrived in the mail, prompting Geisman to say he would contact the treasurer's office; he also confirmed that the return-address envelope on tax bills has changed from a City Hall address to a Boston post office box, though the bills themselves are correct.

On data centers, Geisman described an exchange with Councilor Bolduc — who is advancing a ban on data centers in the city — in which he explained that the facilities generate minimal taxable value: the buildings are windowless shells with a useful life of roughly 30 years, the equipment depreciates to near-worthlessness within two to five years, and the computing output operators sell is not taxable under current state law. The board also voted unanimously to approve motor vehicle excise abatements covering June 18 through July 1, 2026, before entering executive session to discuss Appellate Tax Board cases and exemption applications.
