Greenfield Recreation Commission Sets Winter Carnival 2027 Dates, Flags Budget Cuts

Other Committee · Meeting of May 14, 2026

Greenfield Recreation Commission votes to hold Winter Carnival 2027 on February 5-7 and flags a $7,500 staffing cut. The commission, identified in the meeting by first names only, unanimously set the dates at the May 14 meeting while the recreation director raised alarms about the mayor's proposed FY27 budget, which eliminates a $7,500 temporary full-time wages line used to pay summer seasonals including lifeguards and removes the teen center coordinator position — both in a single budget cycle. The department's total proposed general fund operating budget is $249,363.

The director noted the mayor did increase revolving-fund spending capacity by $10,000 for general recreation and $30,000 for after-school wages, but said "there's no money attached to this." The recreation department budget goes before the Ways and Means Committee on June 2 at City Hall.
