Greenfield school facilities subcommittee launches year-long planning process

Greenfield's Long-Term Facilities Use Advisory Committee held its first working session May 4, beginning a roughly year-long process to examine what the city should do with its aging school buildings. The three-member subcommittee — Chair Sexton, Member Deneve, and Member Webb — operates under a charge approved by the full School Committee and must deliver findings by May 12, 2027. The committee plans to recruit a ten-person advisory panel drawn from parents, staff, students, and community members, with two flexible seats reserved for applicants with housing, planning, or community-services expertise, modeled on the process used for the recent superintendent search.

Scenarios under examination include regionalization, building consolidation, new construction, and alternative community uses for existing buildings, which range in age from 1906 to 1960. Member Deneve reported that after attending an MSBA learning lunch, Greenfield's buildings currently rate as ones and twos on the authority's needs scale and that the standalone AEL pre-K does not qualify for MSBA grant funding unless kindergarten students are added. The committee's next meeting is set for 9 a.m.

Monday, May 18, when members will finalize a public nomination form to begin recruiting advisory panel members.
