Greenfield Traffic Commission unanimously backs seasonal turtle crossing signs at Mill Street bridge. The three-member commission — Chair Sebastian Gutwin, Gene Wald, and Michael Mullen — voted unanimously at its June 23 meeting to recommend installation of removable warning signs on both sides of the Mill Street bridge over the Green River, where resident Samson Whitney of 53 Mill Street documented a seasonal turtle migration that runs from early May through the end of July. Whitney presented a letter of support from Conservation Agent Jessica Siegel and noted similar programs in Montague, Leverett, and Amherst.

The commission, which advises the mayor, will forward the recommendation to the mayor and the Department of Public Works. In separate business, members flagged a structural parking revenue gap tied in part to a city ordinance requiring a minimum 10 percent of gross meter, kiosk, and app revenue be allocated annually to the Downtown Parking Benefit District, and agreed to develop rate-increase proposals for a public hearing targeted for September 2026 — with any changes taking effect no earlier than January 2027.
