Greenfield Board of Assessors explains property assessments in public education session
Other Committee · Meeting of June 15, 2026
Greenfield Board of Assessors holds public education session on property valuations and tax relief. Board Chair Jim Geisman and Chief Assessor Christina Summers led the June 15 presentation at the city library, broadcast on GCTV and Zoom, explaining how the city's net budget — funded roughly 61 percent by property taxes — drives the tax rate, and how residential assessments are calculated from property record cards using 85 arm's-length sales from calendar year 2024. Summers stressed that an accurate property record card "is the basis of everything that we have," and warned that unreported improvements shift tax burden onto other property owners.
Geisman described the three-month abatement deadline as "absolutely immovable," urging residents to file early and use the city's WebPro comparable-sales tool. The board also noted that the city council recently approved an elderly and disabled tax fund, with applications opening in September 2026 and awards beginning in 2027.
