Planning Board Votes 5-0 to Pause Data Centers

Planning Board · Meeting of September 3, 2026

Greenfield Planning Board unanimously backs one-year data center moratorium. Meeting jointly with the Economic Development Committee, the board voted 5-0 to recommend the pause, which would give the city up to 365 days, extendable to 545, to write permanent standards before any data center application arrives. Resident Al Norman told the boards local action "is not going to be the determining factor," citing New York's executive order and a federal bill, the AI Data Center Moratorium Act, backed by U.S.

Rep. Jim McGovern. The board separately voted to restore a deleted zoning sentence allowing multiple buildings on one multifamily lot, but limited it to the Central Commercial, General Commercial, Limited Commercial and General Industry districts after Zoning Board of Appeals Chair David Singer warned against applying it citywide.

In a pre-application review, the board questioned why a proposed 131-acre, 59-lot subdivision at 36 Log Plain Road used only half its allowed 116-unit density.
