Greenfield Community Relations Committee Debates Youth Internships, Communications Gaps

Other Committee · Meeting of April 27, 2026

Greenfield's Community Relations Committee discussed a potential youth internship program and city communications shortfalls at its April 27 meeting, taking no formal votes. School Committee Chair Stacey Sexton, appearing as a guest, outlined real costs facing any internship effort — CORI and SORI background checks for supervising adults, transportation expenses, and mandatory mentorship training — and noted that a prior Greenfield Public Schools internship with the Department of Public Works collapsed when its grant ran out. The city's communications director, Jonathan, said he would collaborate with council members on public-facing content such as agenda summaries and short videos, but warned that even AI-assisted drafting tools cost money and that annual fees for website upgrades to automate meeting-minutes posting run $5,000 to $10,000.

Councilor Bolduc volunteered to contact MassHire to explore workforce-development resources, and the committee agreed to pursue existing Greenfield Community College funding channels for any near-term internship targeting adults 18 and older. The committee also flagged the chronic lag in posting board and commission meeting minutes, which Jonathan called "very ad hoc," and discussed whether the incoming superintendent — starting July 1 — should be required to attend City Council meetings under a longstanding but informal custom.
