Greenfield Restarts Building Panel, Tackles Field Lights
Other Committee · Meeting of September 8, 2026
Greenfield revives dormant building panel, confronts stadium lights and a Title IX-locked field house. Facilities Director Joseph Pugilis told the reconstituted Planning and Construction Committee that roughly 50 of Veterans Field's 350 stadium lights are out, with a full LED overhaul running about $500,000 versus $30,000 to $50,000 to repair the existing system, funded from the school's athletic revolving account. "You're going to hear me use this phrase a lot: putting good money after bad," Pugilis said of the tradeoff.
Separately, the field house's failed boiler cannot be fixed with public money because the boys-only facility violates Title IX, despite a community fundraiser that raised an estimated $3,000 to $5,000 for repairs. Pugilis said the city is effectively maxed out on borrowing until a 2014 high school bond retires around 2034, even as officials cited a new low-interest state building loan program. The committee meets next November 10.
