Greenfield School Committee Votes Down Fifth-Grade Return to Elementary Schools
School Committee · Meeting of March 11, 2026
Greenfield School Committee votes 6-1 to keep fifth grade at the middle school. After nearly two hours of public comment from parents and teachers, including fifth-grade teacher Rose Skrloff, who said she was "feeling confused about why the conversation about moving fifth-grade to the elementary schools is still happening," only Member Goodwin voted to move the grade back to the district's three elementary schools. The committee also voted 7-0 to rescind a Feb. 19 vote on entering mediation after a resident flagged possible open meeting law issues with the attorney general's office.
Consultant Richard Labrie's transportation study found the district could save $121,704 a year by fiscal 2030 by continuing to self-operate its bus fleet rather than contract it out. Mayor DiSorger warned health insurance costs could rise 19.4 percent, or about $2 million, this year, calling it "the health insurance that's killing us" ahead of the March 16 budget hearing.
