Greenfield's Budget and Finance Subcommittee grapples with a $1.7 million school budget gap and shrinking reserve accounts. The panel, led by Chair Sexton and Vice Chair Childs, voted unanimously to approve March 2 minutes and adopt its own written charge, but took no budget votes. A district administrator said the school choice revolving account is projected to drop 51 percent and the special education tuition account 76.57 percent over two years, as federal ESSER relief funds run out.
Title I allocations detailed for each school included $186,112 for Newton and $156,614 for Greenfield High School, figures built before officials learned Title I itself faces cuts. One administrator cautioned, "I'm not oblivious to the fact that we're not going to get $1.7 million," while a member warned that presenting that full figure to the City Council was "like waving a flag." The mayor's recommended budget goes to the City Council April 22.
