Greenfield schools propose drawing $1.25 million from reserve accounts to avoid city budget ask. The Budget, Finance, and Warrants Subcommittee met May 18 and heard from Superintendent Roland, who outlined a plan to cover the gap between the school committee's level-services budget of $25,465,283 and the mayor's proposed appropriation of $24,127,803 — augmented by a $450,000 mayoral addition — by tapping $500,000 from the pre-K revolving account, $600,000 from vacancy savings, and roughly $125,000 from transportation reserves. Business Manager Andy Beck confirmed the district's yellow bus contract carries a fuel adjustment clause and has three years remaining.

Roland cautioned that the vacancy savings account — currently inflated by 17 unfilled positions — represents an unreliable long-term source, telling the panel, "I don't just do this today to take care of today's problem," and flagging fiscal year 2029 as a potential breaking point if enrollment and staffing trends continue.
