Assessors Vote to Enter Executive Session
Other Committee · Meeting of September 2, 2026
Greenfield assessors confirm they don't vote on TIFs as a new downtown deal surfaces. Board members Chuck Green, Jeremy Emberson and Jim Geisman unanimously approved motor vehicle excise abatements for two periods, July 16-August 19 and August 20-September 2, and unanimously entered executive session to discuss real estate negotiations, Appellate Tax Board cases and exemption applications under Massachusetts General Law Chapter 59. Greenfield's mayor told the board a TIF committee, not the Board of Assessors, handles tax-increment-financing votes, and confirmed a new TIF is "being talked about" for a development across the street from City Hall.
The city's assessor said about 90 percent of 2025 single-family home sales were verified as legitimate market transactions, with capes closely tracking assessed values while ranch prices, "the whole point of what I do," still need alignment. The board moved its next meeting to September 23 from September 16 so all three members can attend a discussion of Clause 18 hardship-exemption policy changes.
